    Join us on Sunday August 16th, 1-5 pm at Creekside Community Centre (1 Athletes Way, Vancouver) for our first “living memorial” gathering.

    Schedule:

    1-1:15 pm: Introduction from the organizers
    1:15-2 pm: Storytelling with Kung Jaadee (Haida, Musqueam, and Squamish storyteller)
    2-2:30 pm: Video testimonies from the Climate Disaster Project
    2:30-3:30 pm: Community Discussion
    *Short break*
    3:40-4:30 pm: Decorating Memorial Fabric “Heat Squares”
    4:30-5:00 pm: Final Reflections and Closing

    At the event, we will have:

    • Premiere of video testimonies from heat dome survivors from the Climate Disaster Project.
    • The launch of “Heat Squares”, a community art project to decorate fabric squares, with each square intended to be a place for people to reflect on their sense of loss in relation to the heat dome, whether it be for a fellow loved one, neighbour, or animal/natural world. Long-term, these squares will be combined into quilted wall hangings to be displayed in community spaces in Vancouver.
    • Storytelling from Kung Jaadee, an Indigenous storyteller, educator and published author who has been sharing stories for 30-plus years across Canada. She belongs to the X̱aayda (Haida), xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), Tlingit, Tsleil-Waututh Nations, and is also part Hawaiian.
    • An opportunity for community members to share their heat dome experiences in a community roundtable and connect with others on this topic.

    A light lunch and snacks will be provided.

    Our project is a partnership between SPEC (Society Promoting Environmental Conservation), Climate Disaster Project, Seniors for Climate, and United Way BC Healthy Aging, and University of British Columbia’s Department of Geography, Edwin S.H. Leong Centre for Healthy Aging, and Elders CREATE Lab.
